G20 Summit 2024: Prime Minister during the G-20 summit held in Rio de Janeiro Narendra Modi Expressed his views on “social inclusion and the fight against hunger and poverty”. Prime Minister Modi congratulated Brazilian President Lula for his successful G-20 presidency and praised the arrangements for this summit.
He said that the people-centric decisions taken by India in the summit held in New Delhi have been taken forward under the leadership of Brazil. The Prime Minister also expressed satisfaction over giving priority to Sustainable Development Goals and called it necessary under the principle of “One Earth, One Family, One Future”.
‘250 million people taken out of poverty’
Prime Minister Modi also mentioned the progress made in poverty alleviation in India in the last decade. He said that “We have lifted 250 million people out of poverty and more than 800 million people are being given free food grains.” Along with this, the Prime Minister informed that 550 million people have benefited from the world’s largest health insurance scheme, in which free health insurance has also been included for 60 million senior citizens.

Food security and India’s contribution
Prime Minister Modi also discussed India’s contribution to global food security. He said that recently India has provided humanitarian assistance to Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe, so that food security can be ensured there. Along with this, he also expressed India’s support towards the “Global Coalition against Hunger and Poverty” launched by Brazil and said that this coalition is an important step towards implementing the Deccan High Level Principles adopted at the New Delhi Summit. Addressing the G-20 countries, the Prime Minister said, “The countries of the Global South are most affected by the food, fuel and fertilizer crisis caused by global conflicts.” He stressed that if these discussions are to be truly successful then the challenges and priorities of the Global South will have to be taken into account.
Emphasis on raising the voice of the Global South
Recalling the decision to grant permanent membership of G-20 to the African Union at the New Delhi Summit, Prime Minister Modi said that this was a big step towards raising the voice of the Global South on the international stage. He assured that in the coming time, India will also make efforts to reform the institutions of global governance, so that the voice of developing countries is further strengthened.
